tempests
our island is population two
fields teeming with lavender aster
i seek refuge inside of you
to escape from natural disasters
tsunami waters leave crevices unfilled
waves still break over buried heads
prisoners of storms are unskilled
at evading them—we drown instead
unspoken fears cling to one another
form twisters of our frantic cries
days like this and every other
spent under dark overcast skies
breaths step on the heels of their predecessors
hurricanes loom to raze and plunder
our love knows only these aggressors
anxieties like rolling thunder
sunshine is quixotic thinking
a faraway dream at best
for our canoe keeps sinking
to allow my wish to rest
you have told me you will try
for better days long overdue
baby steps for you and i
towards clear skies for me and you
